Animation Rating Scale

First, determine the quality of the animation on two separate scales. This has nothing to do with your personal interest or taste in the film. These elements should be based on knowledge of animation and film-making, which comes from studying and/or watching many films. Try to be objective.

O. Animation Quality
Does the animation show craftsmanship? Does the style suit the story? Consider the backgrounds, characters, colors, lighting/shades, and details
0 = No quality/Awful
1 = Poor
2 = Fair
3 = Good
4 = Excellent

P. Quality of Story and Voice Acting
Voice Acting, Overall Story (sometimes adaptability)
0 = No quality/Awful
1 = Poor
2 = Fair
3 = Good
4 = Excellent

Second, add up the points so far to determine the Animation Quality Score (AQ).
Animation Quality Scales Total (Sum of Scales O & P)
0-3 = Saltine: Dry, bland, doesn’t dip well, makes you thirsty...to stop eating (Poor)
4-6 = Pretzel: Comfy, familiar, but would be better with something (Good)
7-8 = Pita: Tasty, soft, fillable, delicious (Amazing)

Third, determine your personal style, reaction, and interest in the film on three separate scales. This may not have anything to do with the Quality scales. In other words, these answers are subjective, your opinion, and naturally biased.

Q. Personal Style
Is the animation artistically appealing, to you? (Consider when you look at art, cartoons, or illustrations--how does this film compare?)
0 = Absolutely not/Hated the style
1 = Not really/Didn't like style
2 = A little/Liked the style
3 = Yes/Enjoyed the style
4 = Absolutely/Love the style

R. Personal Reaction
Did you believe the story? Did it make you think? Was the film confusing (or not)? Was the film witty? Did it make you laugh or cry? Were you impressed? Was it nostalgic? Was [whatever it is you deem important in a film] accomplished/successful?
0 = No reaction/Hated it
1 = Little reaction/Didn't like it
2 = Reacted/Liked it
3 = Good Reaction/Enjoyed it
4 = Great Reaction/Loved it

S. Personal Likelihood of Re-viewing
Whether you'd re-watch a film may say more about your reaction and tastes than answering any other kind of question.
0 = None/I'd never watch it again
1 = Slim
2 = Possible
3 = Likely
4 = Very Likely

Fourth, add up the points of this second set of scales to determine the Animation Personal Score (AP)
Animation Personal Scales Total (Sum of Scales Q, R, & S)
0-4 = Sour Cream: I don't want to eat that on its own (Poor)
5-9 = Hummus: Good but abundant, would be better spiced up (Good)
10-12 = Guacamole: Tangy, rich, and flavorful (Amazing)

HOORAY! You now have several ways of reading/recording this information:
1. Just use the numbers:
Animation Quality Score (AQ) = _8 & Animation Personal Score (AP) = _/12
Note: Don't combine the scores because this places less emphasis on your personal score.
2. Use the label chart:
