Well, Matt Reeves did something I was not expecting--created the best Batman film ever. At least, in my opinion. This film was not a superhero action film. Not at all. The Batman is a detective horror film with a structure akin to Se7en or Chinatown. It had many neo-noir moments and even a few gangster sequences that were glorious. I could not stop watching the screen--what superb cinematography and artistry! Robert Pattinson delivers such a different kind of Bruce Wayne, it was refreshing. And Paul Dano's Riddler was shocking and disturbing and perfect. Will this film signal a new direction in blockbuster filmmaking? I don't know but I hope so.
